Beyond The Crystal Mass Iceland Project 2013 – 2017 ongoing
I travelled to Jokulsarlon Iceland in September 2013. Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is located on the Southeast coast of Iceland between Breioamekurjokull glacier and the ocean. This landscape has to be one of the most beautiful and magical places I have ever seen. When the ice breaks off from the glacier in various shapes and sizes it fills the lagoon with stunning floating sculptural icebergs creating a sense of otherworldly beauty. The interplay of the light was fantastic with the reflections from the icebergs creating striking colours of aquamarine, blues and whites. The atmosphere was strangely calm and silent whilst being evocative and immersive. During a boat trip I was able to get up close to some of the large icebergs. This was a very emotional experience. The Icebergs were both powerful and fragile at the same time. It is sad to think that one day this place may disappear as climate change impacts. The experience evoked feelings around the fragility in our lives and the ephemeral nature of our existence.
